Choosing between a combi and a system boiler

The right answer depends on the property, not on what is quickest to fit. A combi heats water on demand and needs no cylinder, which suits most flats, terraces and smaller family homes. A system boiler with a hot water cylinder stores hot water, which works better where two bathrooms might be in use at once, or where the incoming mains pressure will not support a combi running at full output.

Larger properties around Danbury, Writtle and the villages tend to fall into the second group. Newer estate housing at Great Notley or Beaulieu Park is almost always combi. We survey the property, check the mains flow rate and the existing pipework, and then tell you which option actually suits the house.

What we install

We install Worcester Bosch and Baxi. Both are mainstream British-market brands with good parts availability and engineer support, which matters more than it sounds: a boiler is only as good as the ability to get a part for it on a Tuesday afternoon in February.

We are happy to service and repair every other major make, and we will say so plainly if the boiler you already have is worth keeping rather than replacing. A install we talk you out of is cheaper for you and better for us in the long run.

What a fixed price covers

Our quotes are fixed after the survey, not estimated over the phone. The price covers the boiler, the flue, the fittings, any pipework alterations we have identified, a system flush where the system needs one, commissioning, and registering the manufacturer warranty in your name. Building control notification is included on every gas installation.

If we find something genuinely unforeseeable once the old boiler is off the wall, we stop and talk to you before doing anything that changes the price. That happens rarely, and it is the reason we survey first rather than quoting from a photograph.

How long it takes and what to expect

A straightforward like-for-like swap is usually a single day. Moving the boiler to a different wall, or changing from a cylinder system to a combi, is more commonly two to three days because of the pipework involved. We will tell you which it is at the survey, along with how long the hot water will be off.

We use dust sheets, we take the old boiler and packaging away with us, and we set the controls and walk you through them before we leave. You get the manufacturer paperwork, the Building Regulations certificate and our own commissioning record.

Warranty, paperwork and aftercare

Manufacturer warranties on the boilers we install run for several years, and the exact length depends on the model and the range. We register the warranty in your name at handover and give you the paperwork rather than leaving you to chase it. Almost every manufacturer warranty requires an annual service by a Gas Safe registered engineer to remain valid, so we will remind you when yours is due.

You also get the Building Regulations compliance certificate, which arrives from Gas Safe after we notify the installation, and our own commissioning record showing the readings the boiler was set to. Keep both: you will want them when you sell the house.

After the install we are still the people who fitted it. If something is not right in the first few weeks, call us and we will come back. That is easier for everyone when the firm that fitted your boiler is fifteen minutes away rather than a national call centre.
